After having pursued his studies in political sciences at the universities of Lausanne and Paris, Nicolas Bideau completed a degree in further studies of social sciences at the Ecole des Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris and at the University of Beijing from 1995 to 1998.

Following these studies, he worked with several companies in China as a consultant.

In 1999, Nicolas Bideau joined the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAE) as a diplomatic officer for the Political Direction, working at the headquarters in Berne, as well as with the Swiss Ambassador in New Delhi.

In 2003, he was appointed as personal assistant to the president of the Swiss Confederation, Pascal Couchepin.

In 2004, he took over the management of the Competence Centre for Foreign Cultural Policy of the DFAE, before being summoned to the head of the Cinema Section of the Swiss Federal Department of Home Affairs (FDHA).

Since 2011, Nicolas Bideau has been leading “Presence Switzerland”, the organisational unit tasked with public diplomacy within the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.

In 2012, the Swiss Federal Council granted him the title of ambassador.
